Martha's Vineyard

Jan and Melissa invited us up to Martha's vineyard for a long Columbus day weekend. We loaded up the bikes, dropped the dog off with Claire, Ruth and Mark, and headed for the ferry.

We took the ferry from Woods Hole early in the evening and watched the sun go down over the water.

Our bikes shared the tail of the car deck with a group of Harley riders from Long Island and a couple of other motorcycles.
We landed at Vineyard Haven after dark, but this was what it looked like the next morning.
We spent a few hours shopping and revisiting Jan and Melissa's old haunts. They both used to work at this pizza place.
The window in the upper left corner was where Jan lived over the bagle shop. The restaurant on the right was were we ended up for dinner. We were a little shocked that they didn't have margaritas until we tried the sangria...

I was checking out the foul weather gear in one of the shops, but decided that there was no possible way to keep the hat on while biking.

Mel's parents were kind enough to let us use the house for the weekend in exchange for mowing the lawn. I always knew there was more of a future in landscape maintenance than science.
Jan spent part of Saturday watching college football by the wood stove.
The house and furnishings were beautifull

It was hard to believe that it was October already.
And, the outdoor shower was really great.
Sue and I took a bike ride that essentially bisected the island twice and went around most of the perimeter. We didn't set out to go that far but sometimes plans change.
The field gallery had this really cool sculpture garden. I don't know who the artist is but there was no doubt they were stongly influenced by Picasso.

One of the spots we stopped on our bikes was the cliffs at Gay Head. Mel told us it's theonly place in the eastern US that you can watch the sunset into the ocean.

We had to take her word for it though because we had a 20 mile ride back and didn't want to be doing it after dark.
This flock of wild turkeys was in the bushes alongside the road.
The roads were in really good shape and there wasn't oo much traffic. Apparently in midsummer it's bumper to bumper nearly from one end of the island to the other.

We ate here at the "Black Dog" tavern a couple of times. Dinner the night we arrived and breakfast the morning we left. It has a great view of the docks and bay and it turns out that it's sort of famous. We just stumbled across it.
